Heavy diaper contest

17 12 2007

If there was a competition for the heaviest diaper category, my son would win hands down. After 16.5 months, I finally found the winner to the heaviest diaper! On Saturday morning, my son woke up crying after having wet his bed, pillow, and blanket thoroughly. I took off his diapers, and I could swear it is alive! Sealed up the heavy thing, put it on the weighing scale and boy! It was 620 grams!!! WE HAVE A WINNER! (and this not counting those that went to the bed, pillow, and blanket).

I tell you, if I’ve taken a sharp object and poke a hole in the diaper, the “water” would gush out and drown me. I was tempted to take a picture of it and load it up, but I guess I shouldn’t gross you out. :)

Tiptoeing is ok…

22 10 2007

So following up from my last post, I took Shane to a pediatrician on Saturday and she told me “not to believe everything I read”. But hey, that was babycenter.com, which is like my bible when I needed to search for anything. Oh well, if the PD said he’s ok, he’s ok then. She said Shane is an adventurous, excitable kid who can’t wait to get to where he wants to go. In other words, “not calm”. So he rushes from one spot to another – and he can do it a lot faster on tip toe than flat-footed. Well, I’m satisfied with that explanation. He’ll grow out of it soon… I hope! As for now, I’m just going to enjoy the ridiculous sight of him tiptoeing around the house at high speeds!

Time flies when you are having fun…

16 10 2007

Several sayings are true… one of it is “the only thing constant is change” and of course “time flies when you are having fun”. My boss was away at Malta for a week. That week, time just zip past! What we do? Hmm… we have people watching Korean drama, playing online games, chatting on MSN with 10 open windows, reading, taking 2 – 3 hour long lunch, updating blogs, etc. It was really fun… really really fun. Sigh, but all that is about to come to an end. Boss is coming back tomorrow, damnit. Now I’ve got to wait another year for this wonderful moment again.

But that aside, Shane is still walking on tiptoe. I read on babycenter.com that it is actually cause for concern (taken from babycenter.com)… if the child is walking on tip toe for long term. He has been doing that for weeks! Something about a physical problem such as a short Achilles tendon that actually prevents him from standing flat-footed and limits his range of motion in the ankle. But consistent toe walking is more likely a sign of a motor disorder — most commonly, mild cerebral palsy. If the pediatrician rules out cerebral palsy and other physical problems — if his muscle tone is fine, and he has a good range of motion in the ankle — then it is likely to be diagnosed with what’s called idiopathic toe walking. Idiopathic toe walking may be associated with language delays and with certain forms of autism.

Now, that’s scary.

Many people told me my son will grow out of it one day – that he’s just a baby learning how to walk. But apparently baby center don’t think so. He learnt to walk at around 13 months. He’s turning 15 months next week, and he still zips around on tip toe. I checked with other friends; their kids are ok, walking normally already after the initial tip toeing stage. I hope he is all fine. When Shane was younger, we took him to an orthopedic surgeon to check on his bow legs, but he said it’s not a problem. Mild case only.

Perhaps a trip to the pediatrician again, just for the parent’s peace of mind.

All I can say is… thank gawd for ING, or bringing up a baby could be even more painful to the pocket. Pray that he’s all fine.

finally… he walks!

27 08 2007

as parents, the moment your kid learns to walk, the feeling is exhilarating. the hubby and I have been waiting for this moment for weeks, since we first saw shane standing on one spot without support. then we saw him taking a step, then falling on his butt many times. he has been doing the one-step-butt-fall for weeks… so much so that we thought it’ll take him another few more months before he dares to let go and walk more than 1.5 steps at a time. In fact, just last evening, 10 minutes to our son taking his first “real walk”, the hubby and I were just discussing when we should start worrying about his lack of mobility. Then suddenly, with his favorite “towel” as incentive, he let go of the support he was holding on to, walked towards his prize, and instead of falling down after a step or two, he continued walking… and walking! Of course, we were thrilled to bits, but I gathered he was as excited as us, with a huge beam on his face. And it was soooo cute to see him hovering there, about to fall down but did not. And with that, my baby is no longer a baby. I will have to come to terms that he is now a toddler and babyhood is all over and done with. Gee, I missed him being a baby too… but I’m happy that he made this milestone. Congrats, baby!

shane’s 1st bday!

31 07 2007

my son turned 1 recently. it was a great birthday at italiannies the curve. we had about 17 guests and the most beautiful birthday cake. and we had all the food that a kid would love. too bad shane can’t taste them yet… pizza, pasta, cake…. never mind, next year, i’ll throw in ice cream even!!! That will make up for the things he can’t eat this year. but I gave him his first taste of sugar – his birthday cake! It was carrot walnut and he loved it, although he made the foulest face at the first bite and spat it out. but after that, he loved it. Come, lemme show you his cake!

tale of the ill-fated romper…

23 07 2007

my baby has got a nice new romper from the father. cute little blue romper with a black & white picture of a zebra in front with some wordings that I vaguely remember as … something something safari. I thought, wah, he looks cute in it. well, I guess safari adventures can’t be all that clean.

I usually hate going out to places where there isn’t a changing room or nursing room. namely, bad “baby facilities”. but since the little monster had already done his “big one” for the day, I thought we were relatively safe to venture out to this northern indian restaurant at sec 14. after our meal is done, we did the prerequisite diaper check. and ALAMAK! it’s soiled! damnit! I looked left, looked right, went to check the toilet, empty room perhaps, anywhere where we could change his diaper. NONE! Finally, we asked them for a chair we could use to just let him lie down while we change him. the damn restaurant owners refused. I was super pissed then. WTF! So polite when they wanted my business, then suddenly, chair ELEK ELEK! Finally, we were forced to put him down on a counter top, in between two sinks. The soap dispenser was just a mere few inches above his nose. Notti as he is, he tried so hard to grab the taps, roll over to check out the sinks, etc. In the process, we soiled the sides of his brand new romper! Luckily it was a minor thing, and a little scrubing with the wet wipes, and it’s back to normal.

Done with that little adventure, we went back to our table and ordered dessert (yeah man, still got the mood to eat after all that crap–literally). what came was a glass with some carrots puree topped with almonds. yuck, it looked like baby food. we decided to give shane some “sugar”. man, he took a bit of it, and somehow, managed to stain his new top. out came the pack of wet wipes again and in a moment, slight stain remained.

the rest of the day went without further incident.

In the evening, we went to Coca for dinner. Usually we would bring the stroller along but we thought, for once, we shall just do away with it and carry him. When we put him down on the high chair, I thought hmm… there is a puddle of water on the floor near him. Better make sure the small one don’t throw anything on the floor. Later, I felt more water splashing near my feet. I looked up at the ceiling. Hmm, no leak! I looked down, WAH, so wet now! I looked at my son… my gawd, the diaper burst a dam! We lifted him out of the high chair so fast and we could still see water dripping down his legs! (lucky thing we didn’t put on shoes for him too). The service at Coca was a lot better though. They allowed us to use their chair!!!! :) Wah…. blech! Anyway, that was the end of the safari romper. Off it goes and into the bag. Talk about dirty matters. My son is almost 1 yr old and I never had any problems with such a bad leak before. That one was heck of an ill-fated romper…

one heck of a week…

10 07 2007

Last week, I was off the entire week. Not to have fun, but to experience what was one of my most stressful weeks ever. My son was sick with a fever of over 39 degrees Celsius. His tiny body felt like it’s burning up beneath our touch. When I wipe him down with a wet cloth, the cloth turned warm immediately. The fever didn’t go down much throughout Saturday night even though I fed him with paracetamol. It was a sleepless night for us, getting up almost every hour to check on his temperature.

Come Sunday morning, we took him to the nearest hospital. However, as it is a Sunday, there weren’t any pediatrician on call. We settled with a GP who said Shane had a sore throat. He also had some rash on his body, to which the GP said is nothing. He prescribed antibiotics and more paracetamol. That was a big mistake. Shane took the antibiotics, and the rash and fever subsided.

On Monday, we took him to the pediatrician. His PD looked at him and said, it’s ulcers, which means viral infection. Don’t give antibiotics, but since already started, no choice. Just finish it.

On Wednesday, he still has ulcers and developed diarrhea. I took him back to the PD who said it’s contagious. Keep Shane at home for the rest of the week and he’ll be fine.

On Thursday, the fever came back higher than ever. We took him to see another PD for a 2nd opinion. The second PD said got ulcers still, but not a virus infection. It’s bacteria. He even took a blood test, and ruled out dengue, HFM disease, etc. The second PD gave him another round of antibiotics, which gave Shane continuous diarrhea. But he assured us that when the course of antibiotics is finished, my son will be well. However, the fever continued until Saturday night, which is exactly one week from when it started. On Saturday night, we saw he has some spots on his body again. Instead of getting better, he seems to be deteriorating.

On Sunday morning, it was major spots explosion! We rushed him to SJMC cause after seeing the doc for 5 times, they all claimed it’s not measles or chicken pox. SJMC refused to call their PD in unless we admit him. So we had to settle for another GP who is adamant that Shane has an allergy and wanted to prescribe antihistamine. By then, the dad was really fed up. After so many types of medication, 8 days later, and 5 visits to the doctor, no one could tell us what was wrong with our little boy, and all the docs insist it is not measles or chicken pox. Close to admitting him to SJMC , when at the last minute, I remembered a friend telling me there is a PD who opens her clinic on a Sunday. So, as our final ditch effort, we brought him there. She took one look and said, aiyaaaaaa it’s fake measles. We stopped all medication, gave him something for his diarrhea and gave him probiotics. Immediately, he felt better. The rash came out in full force. He was a red lobster by Monday morning and a spotty Dalmatian today.  And I think… by tomorrow, the rash will be totally gone.

And the antibiotics is to be blamed. So, think twice before giving your baby any antibiotics next time and don’t ever trust the words of a GP, especially not with your baby. If that doofus had not prescribed antibiotics at the beginning, the PD would have seen the rash on the next day and know it is measles, and my son would not have to suffer so many days. And the mental anguish that we went through, no parents should suffer that too! The poor kid…

he’s a lucky kid…

30 05 2007

stroller 1stroller 2stroller 3

My son is a lucky kid. I hope he knows just how fortunate he is. Then again, I will continously remind him of it whenever he decides to be a whiny pott next time. BWAHAHHA… sufffffffer! Here are his strollers, sponsored generously by the grandparents, in multiple colors. Sigh. SPOILT! 1st is the red one. Got stolen when the car got hijacked. Then the blue one. Grandparents said so pitiful, cannot recline. So got him the grey one… finally, he’s king of the world! He has 3 rides (excluding another happening one in the car) and he can’t even drive yet!! Would grandpa buy him a nice car next time?
